Like my home girl Mary J. BIige, I have a weakness for sunglasses. Mid-season lens binging has become my summer ritual. Every year around this time, I hunt for sunglasses, and this year has been great. I ventured to Torrid for the first leg of my hunt. I love this store not only because they offer real life up to date style for Xtra Luscious ladies like me, they also have a very impressive accessories collection. Their prices right now are AHH-mazingly, AHH-fordable. When it comes to shopping, nothing beats the tail end of summer, you know, the time of year when your wardrobe goes on repeat because you aren’t a Kardashian. Adding new pair of spectacular specs can change the context, or what we call “the vibe” of your cute romper or summer dress roster. For those of us who aren’t on the lam or walking that walk of shame in last night’s dress (yes Katy Perry, I see them too), eyewear adds the right accent.
Know what you want
The range of eyewear available today is mind-boggling. So many brands, price ranges, shapes, colors and textures. If you don’t set some limitations it can be daunting. Are you sporty? Formal, casual or eclectic? As for price, are you dropping benjamins or hitting the dollarstore? I’ve done it all and I’ve found the best method for me. Start the summer with 2 pairs, both under 20 bucks each. One needs to be funky, the funkier the better, the other… classy, like “rich man’s wife” classy. You know… with the oversized Jackie O frames. With these, you’re good for any occasion.
I’ve heard the arguments on going the designer route with Gucci, Tom Ford, and Bulgari, but I’d rather spend hundreds of dollars sending my boys to summer camp rather than losing it because they got bored and broke my designer shades. This doesn’t mean you skimp on quality. Glasses are meant to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays and the delicate skin around your eyes from ageing.
Spending on what’s trending
According to fashion bosses, large shapes are gwanin’ (the in thing), I’m especially happy about this, it gives me the feeling that I’m not just escaping the glare of the sun and it’s harmful rays, I get a break from eye contact and being attentive. Like a mini vacation in the sun. Lens colours or 2 toned shades like gradients are everywhere this season. I’m in love with the coloured reflection lenses. Don’t look into my eyes, let’s both look into yours! Consequently, I’m less fond of them when I’m on the wrong end.
Don’t always adhere to the school of thought that says less is more, buy classic and simple shapes and colours. I agree if you are going for only one pair, up your budget and buy for practicality. But it’s summer and that means fun and colour and if you live in the north, it also means a limited time to live and dress tropical. Have fun with your personal style and go for it.
